IMPHAL, Mar 13: In a historic first for Manipur cricket, star pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam has sign a deal with Tynemouth Cricket Club under the England Cricket Board (ECB), making him the first cricketer from the State to play for an English club.
Bishworjit is son of Konthoujam Rajendro and Konthoujam Shama Devi of Patsoi Part IV.
He has been a vital player for Manipur in domestic cricket since his debut in 2018.
With over eight years of experience in the State, zonal, List A, T20, and first-class cricket, he has been a consistent match-winner for his team.
His breakthrough came in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, where he emerged as the highest wicket-taker for Manipur with 30 wickets in eight matches.
He finished among the top ten wicket-takers in the country that season, a remarkable feat for a debutant.
Over the years, Bishworjit has continued to dominate domestic tournaments. He holds a National record for a seven-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 season.
His performances in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy have consistently made him one of the most reliable pacers from the North East region.
In the 2023-24 domestic season, Bishworjit led Manipur's bowling attack in the Elite Group of the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, finishing as the team's highest wicket-taker.
He also captained Manipur in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season, once again proving his leadership abilities.
His impressive tally of 42 wickets across all formats in the 2024-25 season made him the highest wicket-taker in the North East Zone.
Presently playing for PTRC, Patsoi under the Manipur Cricket Association, his journey to English Cricket League marks a new chapter not just for him but for cricket in Manipur.
Bishworjit's signing with Tynemouth Cricket Club is expected to inspire budding cricketers from Manipur and the entire North East region, proving that talent from the region can make a mark on the global stage.
His achievement is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and the growing presence of North East players in Indian cricket.
The upcoming season in England is set to begin on April 19, 2025, and Bishworjit will soon embark on his journey to represent Tynemouth Cricket Club.
Fans and supporters eagerly await his performances in English conditions as he takes another step forward in his professional career.
