38th National Games Thangjam Priya-Haobijam Tendenthoi, Y Rojit add bronze medals to State's tally

IMPHAL, Feb 5 : Rowers Thangjam Priya and Haobijam Tendenthoi and cyclist Yanglem Rojit further swelled State's tally in the ongoing 38th National Games by winning bronze medals today.
Thangjam Priya and Haobijam Tendenthoi clocked 8:1.1 (8 minutes and 1.1 seconds) in the women's 2000 m double scull competition to settle for the bronze medal.
Haryana pair of Suman Devi and Kiran sealed the gold medal in the competition by producing a 7:52 (7 minutes 52 seconds) finish while Gauri Nanda K and Saniya J Krishnan of Kerala picked the silver with a time of 7:59.8 (7 minutes and 59.8 seconds).
On getting the bronze, Manipur rowing coach Lakshmi Narengbam who is presently accompanying the State rowing team at Tehri (Uttarakhand) expressed that girls could have performed better and improved the medal this morning. However, use of inferior quality equipment hindered the performances of the duo, she lamented.
Cycling
Yanglem Rojit meanwhile fetched the other bronze medal in the elite men's 1 km individual time trial competition at Rudrapur Velodrome this afternoon to take the State's tally to 11 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze medals.
Rojit managed 1:7.874 (1 minute 7.874 seconds) in the competition to settle for the bronze medal as David of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Devendra of Rajasthan secured the gold and silver medal respectively.
Boxing
After Chinglemba, State boxer Sovi Jajo also assured herself a medal by sealing 5-0 unanimous decision win against Sangeeta Khokhar of Rajasthan in a quarterfinal bout of women's 57 kg category and entered semi-finals.
Earlier, Chinglemba defeated Anshul Punia of Chandigarh to reach the semi-final in the men's 51 kg category competition.
Manipur Boxing Coach Laishram Jipson was upbeat over the performances of the two boxers and exuded confidence that they will perform befittingly in the next important round. He however expressed regret that Sagolshem Bijeta and Thongam Kunjarani went down fighting against very experienced and better opponents, one being an Arjuna Awardee.
Hockey
Like the State men's team, the State women's hockey team also kicked off their campaign in the ongoing games with a draw with Mizoram at Vandhana Kataria (VK) hockey stadium, Haridwar today. Manipur enjoyed a 2-0 early lead  thanks to Lily Chanu Mayengbam (6') and Pinky Thokchom (26' but Mizoram rallied back to draw level.
Yesterday, the Manipur men's team opened their campaign with a 3-3 draw with Madhya Pradesh.
