Senapati, Feb 4 : The Assam Rifles inaugurated the Lt Col (Late) Robert TA Memorial Open Football Tournament today at Senapati Astro Turf ground with a grand ceremony paying tribute to the late officer's legacy and passion for the sport.
The inaugural function was graced by P Chingpai, wife of Lt Col Robert TA as the chief guest. The tournament is organised in association with the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur (SDOAM).
At the occasion, the Assam Rifles stated that people not only celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship but also pay tribute to a remarkable individual whose life embodies courage, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence through the medium of sports.
Colonel Robert TA was the first Army Officer from Maram Community, left an indelible mark on the hearts of many by virtue of his resilience, tenacity, and never say die spirit, said AR.
Col Robert was born on January 24, 1981, at Maram Center in Senapati district of Manipur, to Thoiba Angelus and K Karaila. Raised as the eldest of eight siblings, his early life was a testament to the values of hard work, commitment, and service to the community, AR recalled.
At the age of 23, Col Robert embarked on a remarkable journey by joining the Indian Army in 2004 through the Technical Entry Scheme (TES) examination. Little did he know that he would go on to make history, becoming the first individual from the Maram tribe to rise to the rank of an officer in the Indian Army, AR said.
Commissioned into the Corps of Engineers, Col Robert exhibited exceptional leadership and commitment to his duties. His prowess was not limited to the military domain as he distinguished himself as a versatile and dynamic person. He was a sportsman of unparalleled calibre and participated with remarkable ease in various adventure activities. Notably, football captured his heart, and during his training days, his course-mates affectionately dubbed him "Ronaldo," a tribute to his skill and prowess on the football field, AR said.
In 2008, as a captain, Robert showcased his leadership on a different battleground, leading his squad to victory in the prestigious Army Adventure Challenge Cup. This triumph earned him the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff Commendation award, a recognition of his exceptional contributions to his team's success. Beyond the medals and accolades, Col Robert remained deeply connected to his roots. His journey was not just about personal accomplishments but about breaking barriers and being the trailblazer for others from his community. He exemplified the true spirit of a leader, inspiring those around him to strive for greatness, it added.
The highlights of the inaugural event included a pipe band display for unveiling of the tournament trophy, the launch of the official theme song, the ceremonial kick-off and vibrant cultural and jazz band performances setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
The tournament organized by the Assam Rifles will witness participation from 18 teams bringing together players from different districts in Manipur to compete in the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence.
