IMPHAL, Feb 2: Submitting memorandum to Chief Ministers of eight States in the North East, the Coordinating Committee on Mani- pur Integrity (COCOMI) has ramped up its demand for a state of "Narco-Terrorist Emergency" in the region.
Today, a team of the committee, led by its convenor Khuraijam Athouba, met with BJP State general secretary K Saratkumar at the latter's office at Nityaipat Chuthek and submitted a memorandum to be shot to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu and Tripura CM Manik Saha.
Demanding the Governments to declare a state of Narco-Terrorist Emergency in the NE region, the memorandum urged the Chief Ministers to establish a dedicated Anti-Narcotics Bureau or a force.
After meeting BJP State general secretary K Saratkumar, COCOMI convenor Athouba briefed the media and said, since the last couple of years, Manipur and the other States in the North East have been facing narco-terrorism activities at an unprecedented level.
Manipur alone can't fight narco-terrorism. It needs the assistance and combined force of all the other States in the region. In this line, memoranda calling for a united approach to face the problems of drugs are being submitted to the Chief Ministers of eight NE States, he said.
While COCOMI is sending the memoranda to the CMs of other States, the committee will meet Chief Minister N Biren Singh in person and submit the memorandum, he said.
A similar memorandum will also be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added.
Meanwhile, BJP State unit's general secretary, K Saratkumar lauded COCOMI's approach and assured that memoranda will be delivered to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura.
COCOMI's memorandum contains factual data and reports on seizure of drugs in the NE region. It is seeking the Governments action to convert six demands into action, he said.
COCOMI's memorandum
The memorandum urges the Governments to declare the NE region as a "Narco-Terrorist Emergency Zone".
It urges the States to establish dedicated Anti-Narcotics Bureaus or Forces that would work in close cooperation.
It urges the Government of India to acknowledge that States sharing the border with Myanmar have been affected by narco-terrorism activities, and investigate all involved powerful persons based in Manipur, Mizoram and Myanmar.
It calls on the Government to take immediate actions to curb drug trades and dismantle underground tunnels and other drug-trade related infrastructure. It demands transparent policies and security measures to address narco-terrorism and resolve the current crisis in Manipur. If kept neglected for long, the narco-terrorism activities and related issues in Manipur may become a global problem, it added.
