IMPHAL, Feb 14: A 27-year-old man allegedly stabbed himself dead today at the residence of a girl with whom he eloped a couple of days ago.
Family members of the deceased man have however refuted the charge that he killed himself.
The incident happened at around 2.30 pm at Ningthoukhong Kha Leikai, under Bishnupur district.
The 27-year-old deceased has been identified as Aheibam Roshan, son of (L) Raghumani of Loktak Project Shantipur.
According to family members who spoke to reporters at RIMS today, Roshan worked as a chef at a hotel in Pune.
The family claimed Roshan returned home in January following a proposal by the girl he eloped with for a Court marriage.
Roshan and the girl eloped together on February 11. On the same day, the girl's family asked the man's family to produce the two before dawn.
As both the man and girl kept their mobile phones switched off, the family was unable to reach them.
Following customary practice, the man's family brought the girl home the next day. Claiming that the girl didn't give her consent to eloping, her family tried to separate the two legally.
When the girl's family members were at the man's house for settling the issue, Roshan's family was informed over the phone that he (Roshan) had gone to the girl's house at Ningthoukhong Kha Leikai and was threatening to kill himself holding a knife at around 2.14 pm.
Some minutes later they received news that Roshan had allegedly stabbed himself dead.
When his family reached the girl's residence, Roshan had already been taken to Bishnupur District Hospital.
Roshan was then taken to RIMS Hospital, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Family members have alleged that Roshan couldn't have stabbed himself.
"He went out of home to recharge his phone battery. He must have been beaten and killed," claimed his family.
Bishnupur police took stock of the incident at RIMS and Roshan's mortal remains have been deposited at the hospital's mortuary for post mortem.
