GUWAHATI, Feb 1
The Union Budget 2025-26 has provided a significant boost to the North Eastern Region (NER), with a 47.6 per cent increase in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) allocation.
The budget estimate for FY 2025-26 stands at Rs 5,915 crore, compared to Rs 4,006 crore in the revised estimates for FY 2024-25.
This increase underscores the Modi Government’s commitment to infrastructure, connectivity, industry, and social welfare in the region.
In a big bonanza to all taxpayers with a special focus on the middle class, Finance Minister Nirmala Siatharaman announced a significant cut in tax rates and an increase in rebates. While those with annual taxable income of up to Rs 12 lakh will have no tax liability, those with higher in- comes will have savings of up to Rs 1.1 lakh on account of rate rationalization under the new tax regime (NTR).
Under the NTR, the new tax slabs are: nil tax on annual income of up to Rs 4 lakh, 5 per cent on Rs 4 lakh-8 lakh, 10 per cent on Rs 8 lakh-12 lakh, 15 per cent on Rs 12 lakh-16 lakh, 20 per cent on Rs 16 lakh-20 lakh, 25 per cent on Rs 20 lakh-24 lakh, and 30 per cent on annual income above Rs 24 lakh.
Under the NTR, annual taxable income is calculated by deducting Rs 75,000 (standard deduction) from the salary, and this benefit is available to all taxpayers under the NTR. So effectively, those with an annual salary of Rs 12.75 lakh will have no tax liability as per the Budget proposal.
