Weightlifting
Sorokhaibam Bindyarani Devi and S Nirupama delivered outstanding performances to clinch the gold medal in the women's weightlifting competition held today.
Bindyarani fetched the gold medal in the women’s 55 kg category while setting a new National Record in the snatch segment by breaking the previous record set by Olympic silver medallist and compatriot S Mirabai Chanu with a successful 88 kg lift.
Her dominance continued in the clean and jerk, where she successfully lifted 107 kg in her first attempt.
Though she faltered at 112 kg in her second attempt, she bounced back with a 113 kg lift in her last attempt.
Her total lift of 201 kg was just one kilogram short of her own national record of 202 kg, but her performance cemented her place at the top, making it a memorable National Games for her.
With this victory, Bindyarani now holds all three National records – snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift – in the women’s 55 kg category.
Speaking on her remarkable performance, Bindyarani Devi said, "I was well prepared, and I am happy with my performance. It is always nice to get a record in your name.
"It's good that now both snatch and clean & jerk records are in my name."
On why she didn’t go for 115 kg in her last attempt to breach the overall record of 202 kg, she explained, "My second attempt of 112 kg was not successful, so I thought that it's better to finish with a good lift. Had the second attempt been successful, I would have gone for 115 kg. But it's okay, I am happy with my performance."
