Poppy plants destroyed

IMPHAL, Feb 1: In a blow to organised illegal opium poppy cultivation in Mani-pur, security forces have destroyed around 30 acres of poppy plants today.
The 30 acres of poppy was destroyed at Khudei Khullen in Tengnoupal district.
A combined team of Assam Rifles and State Police carried out the drive in the morning.
The operation began at 8.30 am involving around 100 personnel of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police.
The operation was a cri-tical step in combating the spread of narcotics and its detrimental effects on society, said Assam Rifles in a statement.
In the past few days, security forces have destroyed several tens of acres of poppy plantations in the hill areas of Manipur.
While the crackdown on opium poppy cultivation has continued, no farmers or persons involved in the illegal activities were arrested today.
Notably, around 45 acres of poppy plantation was destroyed yesterday at Lhungjang village hill range under Saikul police station in Kangpokpi by personnel of the district police and CRPF.
Reportedly, earlier in the day, a team of security forces who went to destroy the poppy plantation were confronted by a mob of around 80 people.
The mob reportedly damaged four vehicles.
Later, with the arrival of additional force, around 45 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed, police had said.
