Myanmar is of considerable strategic significance to India, sharing a border that exceeds 1,500 kilometres with the Northeast states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. This porous India-Myanmar border has historically facilitated the movement of insurgents and arms from both nations, and the ongoing instability in the region may further complicate security dynamics.
To contextualise recent events, in 2017, Rakhine state experienced a severe campaign of persecution by the Myanmar Army against the Rohingya Muslim population, whom the Myanmar government has never formally recognised as citizens.
