IMPHAL, Jan 7 : The Irabot Foundation Manipur (IFM) has submitted a  memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to implement The Manipur Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act (MCPLWA), 2024 more effectively and protect the wetlands and paddy lands of Manipur.
Addressing a press briefing at Manipur Press Club after submitting the memorandum, IFM president Kh Gopen Luwang said that the way in which MCPLWA is being implemented lacks seriousness.
Saying that encroachment on wetlands and paddy lands by building sheds and residential places is evident especially in Imphal East and Imphal West, he added that constructing unauthorised structures at protected places not only causes ecological imbalance but also reduces farm yield.
Several wetlands in Manipur's valley districts including Loktak have been shrinking and the same is concerning, Gopen said and added that changes in natural flow of rivers and frequent occurrence of flood and drought is related to the gradual shrinking of wetlands and paddy lands.
MCPLWA has to be implemented strictly to avert ecological crisis, he said while expressing desire for the Government to constitute a dedicated monitoring committee to oversee the implementation of MCPLWA and penalise whoever is found encroaching on wetlands and paddy lands.
There are also people who construct turf football grounds and other unauthorised structures at protected lands by violating the rules and regulations of  MCPLWA, he said and added that they are ready to lend a hand to the Government in protecting wetlands and paddy lands.
