IMPHAL, Jan 7: A commemorative function of the infamous RIMS Massacre in which nine civilians were gunned down by CRPF jawans at the gate of RIMS   on January 7, 1995 was held today under the banner “RIMS Firing Victim Memorial Day”.
The commemorative function during which people paid tributes to the victims of the infamous massacre was organised by the RIMS Firing Victim Memorial Day Observation Committee.
Former Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch and former Medical Superintendent of RIMS Dr Y Mohen Singh, Progressive Youth Organisation (Uripok Sorbon Thingel) president Advocate Kh Tarunkumar, Uripok Poirei Apunba Lup advisor Kangjam Buben Meetei and Lalambung Takhellambam Leikai Youth Development Organisation president Elangbam Joykumar attended the memorial function as presidium members.
Dr Y Mohen said that today is the 30th anniversary of the killing of nine civilians by CRPF at RIMS gate.
Recalling that a student of RIMS was also among the victims, he prayed that such massacres do not happen ever again on the soil of Manipur.
He also prayed that the souls of the victims may rest in eternal peace.
Moirangthem Subhashchandra, a member of 30th RIMS Firing Victim Memorial Day Observation Committee also recalled that nine civilians including a student of RIMS, an auto-rickshaw driver and a care-taker of public toilet were made to stand in a row before they were mowed by CRPF jawans without doing any verification.
He said that only the RIMS Massacre but all other massacres and killings including the Malom Massacre are highly condemnable.
Following people’s sustained struggle to repeal AFSPA which enables security forces to kill people without any trial, the infamous Act was lifted from several areas of Manipur.
But recently, AFSPA has been reimposed in many areas and it has brought back bitter memories of oppression of civilians by security forces, he said.
He urged both the Union Government and the State Government to repeal AFSPA from the State at the earliest.
