IMPHAL, Jan 5: Even though schedules have been announced and Returning Officers (ROs) named for election of BJP State presidents, no RO has been named for Manipur.
BJP National office brought out a list of ROs on January 2 for election of new presidents of its State units but only Manipur was left out of the list.
BJP National office named ROs for 29 States and Union Territories to hold organisational election to elect booth level, mandal level, district level office bearers and the presidents, and complete the election process by January 25 or the last week of January.
Most of the ROs named for the party’s organisational elections are Union Ministers, Union State Ministers, Rajya Sabha Members and Lok Sabha Members.
The BJP National Office has already named ROs for Andaman & Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Ladakh, Lakswadeep, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizo-ram, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telan-gana, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh.
With Delhi going to Assembly elections soon, no RO was named for the State.
Meanwhile, many observers have opined that no RO has been named for Manipur as the BJP Central office wants to delay the organisational election in the State because of the ongoing violent crisis.
Some others have opined that the BJP Central Office does not care about Manipur after the BJP candidate and the candidate supported by the party suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of Congress party in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year.
Although the election process of a new BJP Manipur Pradesh president is likely to be delayed, due process has been initiated to hold elections for booth level, mandal level and district level presidents, informed a source.
It is also being speculated that the BJP Central Office may appoint a qualified person who does not belong to either Meitei or Kuki community as the new president of BJP Manipur Pradesh.
At the same time, there is also the possibility of extending the tenure of incumbent BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi.
Nonetheless, the deliberate omission of Manipur from the list of States and Union Territories notified for organisational election has proved to be a serious setback to BJP workers.
Although BJP is a National party registered with the Election Commission of India and as such organisational election is mandatory, the posts of booth, mandal, district and State presidents are generally not contested, said the source.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders are deeply worried about how many men and women would get elected if they contest local body elections such as ADCs, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats on BJP tickets under the prevailing condition in Manipur, according to the source.
Many people have already started questioning whether the BJP Government has been deliberately putting off the local body elections considering its slim chances of winning these elections, the source added.
