IMPHAL, Jan 30 : On the occasion of Martyrs' Day, former Chief Minister and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Okram Ibobi expressed the need for adoption of Mahatma Gandhi's ideal of non-violence to bring peace in Manipur.
He made the remark during the 77th death anniversary observance of the Father of the Nation held at Congress Bhawan on BT Road organised by the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
Addressing the gathering, O Ibobi stated that despite being independent, Manipur has almost lost its freedom owing to the protracted conflict.
It is essential for people to collectively adopt the principles and ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi to bring peace in the State, he said.
Mahatma Gandhi's belief that non-violence is the only way to achieve peace is accepted as gospel by people now. As a result, his monuments are erected across the globe and world leaders pay homage to Gandhi, said O Ibobi.
He also urged people to recall that it was Gandhi's powerful philosophy of non-violence that drove out the mighty British empire from the country and marked the dawn of an independent India.
During the ceremony, O Ibobi led the gathering in offering a floral tribute to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi with the participation of K Meghachandra, president, MPCC; Gaikhangam, member, Congress Working Committee; MLAs, former president of MPCC, former MPs, former MLAs and MPCC office bearers and members.
