IMPHAL, Jan 30 : Showing empathy and care, a team of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) visited a 70 year old internally displaced person who attempted suicide and check on his well-being at RIMS Hospital today.
The MPCC team led by its president K Megha-chandra also extended cash assistance for the treatment of the survivor.
Notably, the elder, a resident of Khuga  Tampak, Churachandpur was found hanging at the relief camp set up at Laisoi Water Sports  Complex at Moirang, Bishnupur yesterday. He, fortunately, survived the attempt and is undergoing treatment at RIMS's ICU.
It may be mentioned that a 20-year-old displaced woman had committed suicide at Mekola Higher Secondary School on January 7. Prior to her, another 36 year old man was found hanging at a relief camp at Kwakta in July last year.
Speaking to the media after checking the health condition of the survivor, K Meghachandra said that the suicide attempt by the elder highlights the dire situation faced by the IDPs and the emotional and psychological toll of displacement.
Saying that the elder shared the emotional pain and desperation he felt living in a relief camp before attempting suicide according to his family, the Congress MLA added that the man, fortunately, survived the attempt though he is yet to gain consciousness.
Saying that about five IDPs had committed suicide in relief camps since the onset of the crisis, Meghachandra asked how long the Government wants the IDPs to languish in relief camps.
He also said that there were reports of IDPs attempting suicide amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
Stating that the future of IDPs is still uncertain and anything could happen to them the next moment, Meghachandra added that there, however, is no sign of the Government taking up any initiative to resettle the IDPs even after months of the crisis.
Many  IDPs also complained of not getting any benefit from the Government to the Congress party, he said and added that the Government must address  the grievances of the IDPs and also protect the lives and properties of the people.
