SENAPATI, Jan 29 : Apart from levying tax, members of an underground outfit snatched the keys of two trucks belonging to people of Senapati district yesterday.
The incident happened at Porompat, Imphal when the trucks were unloading sand brought from Dimapur.
Two unidentified persons approached the drivers and asked if they had paid their taxes. They then snatched the keys when they were told that the trucks were ferrying the sand with NPO's (Naga People's Organisation) permission, said Senapati District Truck Owners Association and Senapati District Truck Drivers Union.
The keys were returned the next day after the intervention of the police, said the organisations.
There is already an agreement between the Naga People's Organization (NPO) and the Govt of Manipur for free movement of essential goods trucks belonging to the Naga community. The drivers were left helpless without the truck keys for a night in Imphal, said the Senapati organisations.
The two unknown persons identified themselves as members of an underground outfit, and asked the drivers to contact them on WhatsApp, they said.
A case has been registered at Imphal East police station.
Denouncing the incident, the Senapati District Truck Owners Association and the Senapati District Truck Drivers Union said they will be forced to launch strong agitation if harassments of drivers are left unchecked.
