The fall of Rakhine in Myanmar and its implications for India

Since the military coup in Myanmar that resulted in the ousting of the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, the country has been engulfed in ongoing conflict between the junta and various ethnic armed organisations (EAOs). The military regime, officially designated as the State Administration Council (SAC), has progressively ceded control to rebel factions, with recent reports suggesting that it currently governs less than half of Myanmar’s territory.
A noteworthy development occurred on December 20, 2024, when the Arakan Army, affiliated with the United League of Arakan (ULA), announced its successful seizure of the Tatmadaw’s western command headquarters situated in Ann town, Rakhine State.
