SAANS launched

IMPHAL, Jan 24 : Health Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan has launched a "Social Awareness and Action to Neutralize Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS)" and National Newborn Week at Classic Grande at Chingmeirong today.
The launch function was organised by State Health Society, NHM Manipur and Directorate of Health Services.
Speaking at the function, Dr Ranjan said that pneumonia is considered very dangerous for children under 5 years.
Pneumonia is common in children especially among those who are less than 5 years old, he said.
Saying that there is a need to spread community awareness about pneumonia, the Minister added that no antibiotics should be taken without a prescription.
Dr Ranjan, meanwhile, said that infant mortality rate is low in Manipur compared to other States.
Health Director Dr Chambo Gonmei said that a strong immune system are crucial for preventing and fighting off pneumonia.
Saying that the Health Department has been carrying out vaccination programmes for pneumonia, he appealed to the people to vaccinate their children without fail.
State Mission Director of NHM Dr M Dinesh, on the other hand, said that pneumonia accounts for nearly 45 per cent of deaths of children (under 5 years old).
Family Welfare Director Dr Hemantakumar and State Nodal Officer (child health) Dr A Silviya also attended the programme.
