UKHRUL, Jan 21 : The 48th General conference cum Sports, Literary & Cultural Meet of the Zingsho Katamnao Long (ZKL) began amidst fanfare at Shangshak Phunghon village Playground.
The event is being held under the theme 'Youth towards peace for holistic progress'. It will go on till January 31.
Former Minister AS Arthur, his son MP Alfred Kanngam Arthur, Deputy Commissioner Kamjong Rangnamei Rang Peter and former MLA Victor Keishing and several village leaders attended the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, the nonagenarian, AS Arthur exhorted youths to hone their skills and talents and excel in sports.
"I came here to bless you all. May this platform let our youths expose their talents, and inspire the younger generations for a meaningful life," Arthur said.
DC Kamjong, Rang Peter greeted the gathering, encouraged youths to excel in sport and bring laurels.
He urged youths to avoid abusing drugs and join the war on drugs to make Kamjong free from drugs.
Former MLA Victor Keishing dwelt on the importance of preserving "our culture to preserve our identity".
The opening programme witnessed folk songs from Zingsui youths, blowing of trumpet, musical shows by Masotkhon, Frankson Rungsung and host village enthralled the gathering.
Subsequently, the ZKL Games & Sports secretary Something Sira administered the oath taking of the 48th Sports Meet.
AS Arthur declared the 48th General Conference cum Sports, Literary & Cultural Meet open by throwing a football on the ground.
A total of 37 units of the ZKL are participating in the meet.
The sports meet include both outdoor and indoor games like football, volleyball, race, high jump, long jump and archery etc.
Other competitions include folk dance, folk song, handicrafts, Lungchan laa, quiz, essay writing, painting, acting/play, and choreography.
The general conference is being hosted by Shangshak Phunghon Katamnao Long under the aegis of Zingsho Katamnao Long, Kamjong district.
