Rohingyas convicted

IMPHAL, Jan 22 : The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West convicted a Rohingya couple for staying in Manipur illegally today.
The two refugees from Myanmar who were convicted under Section 14 (C) of Foreigners Act have been identified as Zeyabur Rahman (37), s/o (L) Serajun Salam and his wife Fatiam Begum (35) of Myanmar's Maungsawat presently staying at Moreh Ward number 2.
The couple was produced before the Court by police who later submitted a charge-sheet against them for summary trial.

One juvenile who is the son of the arrested couple was detained at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport yesterday.
The juvenile was coming from Hyderabad holding an identity card issued by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in March 2023 and set to expire on March 17, 2025.
The juvenile didn't possess other documents to enter the protected areas of Manipur.
In the follow up action, the father and mother of the juvenile visited Singjamei police station without possessing any valid documents to enter Manipur other than the identity cards issued by UNHCR.
The juvenile has been sent to Takyel Boys Observation Home for 15 days.
Zeyabur Rahman, during interrogation, disclosed that they are Rohingya Muslims and he and his family fled to Bangladesh following a military crackdown in Myanmar.
They stayed in a refugee camp in Myanmar for a few months before coming to Kolkata.
From Kolkata, the Rohingya family went to Hyderabad and made UNHCR identity cards through the Hyderabad branch of the UN refugee agency.
After making the UNHCR cards, the family came to Moreh and they have been staying there since three years back.
The Court after hearing the submission of the APP of the State observed that a foreigner cannot visit anywhere in India with the UNHRC cards.
The Court also said that the Central Government had reimposed protected area permits in Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram.
The Court, after convicting them for the offence under Section 14 ( C) of Foreigner Act, allowed the police to detain them at a designated refugee detention centre till the rising of the Court apart from imposing a fine of Rs 2 thousand each against them.
