IMPHAL, Jan 22 : The Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council has questioned the relevance of observing Statehood Day at a time when the Government has failed to protect the lives and properties of the people.
Addressing a press conference today at Irawat Bhawan, CPI/MSC spokesperson RK Amusana said that Manipur attained Statehood as a result of the efforts and sacrifices made by all the people.
"However, the people of Manipur today have been deprived of all their Constitutional Rights. They are no longer safe in their own State", said Amusana while questioning the failure of the Government to end the conflict which has been going on for more than 20 months.
"We are not against the celebration of Statehood Day, Republic Day and Independence Day. As Indian citizens we also wish to participate in the celebration. But how can we participate in these events when the people of Manipur have been suffering for the past 20 months", he added.
Furthermore, RK Amusana appealed to the Government to protect the rights of the people and take immediate steps to end the conflict and restore peace in Manipur.
