IMPHAL, Jan 18: In a big boost to conservation efforts, the Government has allowed registration of ponies, said Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Director  Dr RK Khogendrajit.
The decision to allow registration of ponies was taken by the Government on December 16, and this will give incentives to pony owners and enhance conservation efforts, he said, speaking to reporters at his office at Sanjenthong, Imphal today.
The Director informed that the department in association with stakeholders including pony and polo associations will jointly conduct the registration processes.
Registration of the ponies will allow owners and the related associations avail incentives towards buying fodder, he said.
Fodder is limited during the rainy season and floods. The incentive to be given by the Government will allow owners and the associations buy supplements for their ponies, he added.
Many pony related associations and clubs including Manipur Pony Society, Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Manipur Equestrian Association and All Manipur Polo Association have been urging the Government to allow registration of ponies for some time.
Considering the importance of such a process, the Government has now allowed the registration process, he said.
Clubs and associations which have existed for more than 6 months, and working for conservation and promotion of ponies will be allowed to get registered after verification, he said.
Individual owners who are not part of any club will also be allowed to get the registration done after submitting details of their ponies, he added.
Besides giving incentives towards fodder and supplements, the registration will allow pony owners and associations get their ponies insured when they get sick or die, said the Director.
In case the owners belong to Below Poverty Line (BPL) or Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, they have to bear only 20 percent of the premium on insurance. The remaining amount of the premium will be shared by the Centre (50 percent) and the State Government (30 percent), he added.
