Two held for selling chemical-treated banana

IMPHAL, Jan 17: Two individuals have been arrested by police for selling green bananas after dipping them in an aqueous solution suspected to be some chemical to ripen the bananas.
On the other hand, a woman who exposed the fraudulent act of the duo on social media has been rewarded.
The unethical practice of dipping green bananas in an aqueous substance was exposed on Facebook on January 15.
On seeing the Facebook Post, the Officer-in-Charge of City police station immediately formed a team to investigate the matter.
They managed to pull up the two fraudulent traders on the same day from Naga Nala behind Ngari Gali, Thangal Bazar.
The two were identified as Merai Ibecha Begum (66) w/o Hesam of Sora Mamang Leikai, presently staying at Yairipok Tulihal, Kaina Poiroukhongjil and Md Maniruddin (40) s/o late Karimuddin of Yairipok Kaina Poiroukhongjil.
Ibecha was selling the bananas supplied by one unknown woman on January 14. The unknown woman also gave Ibecha some chemical to ripen the bananas.
Maniruddin was hired by Ibecha to dip the green bananas into the unknown aqueous substance.
Ibecha and Maniruddin were produced before SDM Imphal West.
The Magistrate bound them down under Section 128, BNSS and they were released after the necessary process.
Police have been working to identify the unknown woman (wholesale vegetable supplier) who gave the chemical to Merai Ibecha Begum for ripening the green bananas, sources said.
On the other hand, Preety Thangjam (33) w/o Th Anandkumar of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai who recorded the act of treating the green bananas with suspected chemical substance and exposed it to the public through Facebook has been felicitated by Imphal West district police.
Additional SP M Amit presented rewards/gifts to Preety at City police station this afternoon.
Additional SP Rojit Irom, SDPO N Ingocha and City police station OC N Gokulchandra were also present at the felicitation.
Moirangthem Shantalembi (47) w/o Bimol who accompanied Preety when she recorded the unethical act was also present during the felicitation.
