UMPC meets SA on tackling misinformation

IMPHAL, Jan 17: The United Meitei Pangal Committee (UMPC) Manipur held a meeting with Kuldiep Singh, Security Advisor to the Government of Manipur on strengthening communal harmony and tackling misinformation.
The meeting held today at the Chief Minister’s Office underscored the importance of building mutual respect and understanding among the various communities in Manipur.  
Highlighting the detrimental effects of misinformation and hate speech on social media such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, the discussion emphasised the urgent need for intervention.
In order to curb the spread of divisive narratives, the UMPC recommended several measures including establishment of a monitoring framework to identify and counter misinformation, collaboration with social media monitoring team for timely action against harmful content and conducting public awareness campaigns to educate users about the consequences of spreading false information.
According to a press release issued by UMPC, the meeting highlighted the need for initiatives that nurture trust and inclusivity among the communities of Manipur.
It also recommended organising inter-community events, encouraging grassroots-level participation in peace building activities and implementing educational programmes that celebrate the State’s cultural diversity.
The UMPC urged the Security Advisor and the Government of Manipur to prioritize the agendas of strengthening communal harmony, tackling misinformation and promoting peaceful coexistence, and take up concrete steps to address them.
