IMPHAL, Jan 17 : The Meetei Alliance (MA) has written to Chief Minister N Biren Singh regarding encroachment and land misappropriation in Reserved and Protected Forest areas in Manipur and expansion of Kuki villages.
The Alliance, in a statement, alleged that the crisis in Manipur has revealed significant irregularities involving encroachment in Reserved and Protected Forest land facilitated by corrupt officials with the examples being K Songjang Protected Forest in Churachandpur, Khuga Reserved Forest in Churachandpur and Kha-menlok Gwaltabi Reserved Forest in Imphal East.
On expansion of villages, the Alliance said that the Government data indicates a two fold increase of villages in Manipur from 1,957 in 1969 to 3,856 in 2023.
Alarmingly, 87.2 per cent (1656 villages) of this growth is concentrated in four districts-Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur which are all predominantly inhabited by Kukis, it said and added that the abnormal expansion of villages raises concerns about potential encroachment into Reserved and Protected Forest areas.
Saying that failing to address the issues urgently can result in fraudulent compensation claims by encroachers during land acquisition for National Highway development projects and long term environmental and administrative consequence, the Alliance urged the Chief Minister and the State Government to carry out thorough survey to rectify misappropriated land records in Reserved and Protected Forest areas using historical record as the basis for verification.
The Alliance further urged the Government to implement robust measures to prevent fraudulent payouts to illegal encroachers during land acquisition.
