IMPHAL, Jan 15: The 33 Assam Rifles was honoured with the prestigious WCDM-DRR (World Congress on Disaster Management – Disaster Risk Reduction) Award 2024 for its exemplary response to Manipur floods.
The award ceremony was organised at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi.
Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry conferred the award on 33 AR for their efforts in rescuing victims during the Manipur floods caused by Cyclone Remal in June and July 2024, said IGAR(South) in a statement.
Colonel Radha Krishna, Commandant of 33 Assam Rifles, received the award on behalf of his Battalion.
The catastrophic floods in the months of May, June and July 2024 wreaked havoc across Imphal valley, submerging vast areas and displacing thousands.
Responding to the crisis, 33 Assam Rifles mobilised 47 flood relief columns as first responders and conducted relentless relief operations under treacherous conditions.
The Assam Rifles and Indian Army had launched Operation Rahat I and II in June and July respectively, during which 33 AR rescued a total of 3445 flood victims.
In addition, the Unit provided immediate healthcare through Mobile Medical Clinics and assisted in supply of relief material to stranded people.
The battalion’s selfless services were epitomized during acts such as the night evacuation of 21 critically ill ICU patients from Raj Medicity Hospital and the rescue of a 73- year-old paralytic man trapped in 13 feet of floodwaters in Nagampal. These heroic efforts showcased the Assam Rifles’ steadfast commitment in protecting lives and fostering resilience in disaster-affected areas, said IGAR South.
The Assam Rifles’ unwavering dedication in serving the Nation, even in the face of extreme adversity, was adequately exemplified through its commendable response during the floods in Manipur. The recognition bestowed upon 33 AR by World Congress on Disaster Management underscores the critical role of the Assam Rifles in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, it said.
