IMPHAL, Jan 15 : In yet another instance of offensive, Kuki militants dropped bombs from drones targeting a temporary camp of the Manipur Rifles in Imphal West yesterday night.
The incident reportedly happened at around 9.30 pm yesterday near Kangchup Chingkhong Langdeibung Bridge, under Lamshang police station, Imphal West district.
Notably, this was the second major aerial attack using drones Kuki militants have carried out after the September 1, 2024 attack at Koutruk.
Yesterday, two bombs, one after the other exploded close to a bunker of the Manipur Rifles camp. No one was injured in the explosions.
While the drones retreated and flew away after targeting the temporary camp of the MR, security forces rushed to the spot and took security measures.
Today, the police and forensic experts have recovered parts of the bombs and devices from the spot examination and investigation.
Lamshang police have registered a case related to the aerial attack for investigation.
It may be noted here that the use of sophisticated drones to drop bombs was first reported on September 1, 2024.
During the attack at Koutruk, Kuki militants launched both ground and aerial offensive.
While houses and properties belonging to the Meitei villagers were burnt, the militants killed a married woman and injured several persons including her minor daughter.
In the aftermath of the attack, the State Government and security forces reportedly procured drone guns as a counter-measure.
While the drone guns are said to have been deployed with the security forces in sensitive areas, their use has not been reflected.
Drones have been reportedly used as weapons for dropping bombs on enemies in Myanmar civil war and other regional armed conflicts.
