IMPHAL, Jan 14 : A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between JNIMS Blood Centre and Helping Hands for People to provide blood free of cost to paediatric patients who are between 0 & 12 years of age.
Under the "Free Blood for Children" scheme, JNIMS Blood Centre will provide blood free of cost, and patient parties will not have to provide/donate replacement for the blood given.
At the launch of the Free Blood for Children scheme at JNIMS today, Helping Hands for People president Premjit Moirangthem said the scheme has been launched to help paediatric patients (0-12) get life saving blood transfusion swiftly and do away with the burden of finding donors for replacement blood.
"The scheme has been launched today with doctors and students of JNIMS donating blood for the scheme. For all future needs, helping Hands for People will donate blood," Premjit said.
The scheme at present covers patients who are between 0-12 years of age and at JNIMS only. With more support, the same scheme may be launched at private hospitals. The Helping Hands for People is taking efforts in this direction, he said.
Families of paediatric patients who need blood may call Child Helpline Numbers of the Helping Hands for People--8014330824, 7005677610 or 6009541050 to avail the benefits of the scheme, Premjit said.
For the scheme to expand and be successful, the Helping Hands for People needs the support of the public. Generous donors may approach the organisation or JNIMS Blood Centre and donate blood in a dedicated account opened for the Free Blood for Children scheme, Premjit said.
Meanwhile, he said, the percentage of Voluntary Blood Donation (VVD) has gone below 30 percent in Manipur. 30 percent is a low number and this can't meet the demand for blood in the State, he added. The Helping Hands for People has the objective for the State to reach 100 percent Voluntary Blood Donation. This can be achieved with the support of the people, he added.
At the event, JNIMS Blood Centre's Head, Dr Surit appreciated Helping Hands for People for launching the scheme. He said the scheme will immensely help children who need blood transfusion and enable JNIMS to serve the patients better and efficiently. Associate Professor of Department of Haematology, Dr Irom Anil; JNIMS Additional Medical Superintendent and Head of Child Ward Dr Kameshore, JNIMS Students Association members, PGT and Junior resident doctors donated blood.
JNIMS Medical Superintendent, Dr Lokeshwor was present at the signing of the MoU.
