Punished for rape : Koireng-led UNLF

IMPHAL, Jan 13: The proscribed Koireng-led UNLF has claimed that it punished one rapist by pumping a bullet on his leg.
According to a press release issued by the outfit’s Secretary of Publicity M Shak-Hen, one Rosy (name changed) who was returning home from Delhi stayed in a hotel at Imphal on January 10.
Khaidem Nongdam Khanganba (30) s/o Kh Mangilal of Nagamapal Phougeisangbam Leikai was holding a birthday celebration in the same hotel.
Taking advantage of the hotel’s security laxity and Rosy’s loneliness, Nongdam Khanganba, masquerading as the hotel’s staff, came inside Rosy’s room.
Even as he tried to force Rosy (28) to consume alcohol, she resisted.
The tussle between the two lasted throughout the night. In the wee hours of the next day, Nongdam Khanganba subjected the girl to physical assault and mental harassment and ultimately raped her.
This account given by the victim was also confessed by Nongdam Khanganba, the outfit said.
After a detailed investigation by the outfit’s Special Task Force, it was established that the victim’s account was true. Later, Nongdam Khanganba pleaded for mercy and pledged not to ever commit such a heinous and immoral crime. Rosy too forgave him on humanitarian ground. Subsequently, the party after deliberating the matter minutely, decided to award a light punishment instead of awarding capital punishment, Shak-Hen said. He also appealed to all the owners of hotels, lodges and rented houses to keep enough staff and ensure security of all lodgers and tenants.
