IMPHAL, Jan 10 : The United Women Rights Defenders (UWRD) has urged Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to address the hardships faced by women and children in relief camps, with some even being driven to suicide in a few instances.
Speaking to media persons during a press briefing held at the Thangjing Hall of Manipur Press Club today, Haobijam Nita, member, UWRD, shared that the displaced folks staying in relief camps since the eruption of violence on May 3, 2023 continue to face a slew of adversities in their daily lives.
Thus she urged the Manipur Governor to personally visit the relief camps at Mekola, Kanglatongbi and others to assess the living conditions and needs of the elderly, women, children, newly weds, adolescent girls and sick persons.
Urging the Governor to look into the reasons behind the suicide cases of relief camp inmates, Haobijam Nita stressed on the gravity of the situation while pointing out that such incidents might reoccur.
In order to deal with this issue, she sought psychosocial support and establishment of counselling cells for the IDPs with the help of psychiatrists from RIMS and JNIMS hospital.
Additionally, she appealed to the Governor to ensure that sanitary items are easily available to women in relief camps.
The UWRD member further called for rehabilitation and resettlement of the IDPs in their original homes with provisions for adequate security given to them for a minimum period of five years.
