IMPHAL, Jan 10 : The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMWU) is set to observe the 36th Drivers' Day at its office at MG Avenue on January 14.
Speaking to the media in this regard at MG Avenue today, AMRTDMWU general secretary Maimom Anil appealed to all transporters to not take the wheel for commercial purposes on the day (January 14).
He also appealed to families of every driver in Manipur to attend the event.
Floral tributes will be offered to 314 deceased drivers apart from presenting simple gifts to the families of deceased drivers and pensioners during the observance, Anil said.
Saying that Drivers' Day is observed every year in commemoration of the massive protest staged for seven days against harassment and belittling of drivers at Koirengei in January 1990, he added that harassment of drivers, however, continues till today.
Many drivers and handymen have been killed for trivial matters, he said while appealing to all concerned to be empathetic towards drivers who are on the road most of the time to supply the needs of the people.
