Anti-drone system put into service: Police

IMPHAL, Sep 7: In view of the new tactics and weapon systems being deployed by Kuki militants since the beginning of the current month, Manipur Police and other security forces have taken up appropriate security measures.
Briefing media persons at Manipur Police headquarters today, IGP (Intelligence) K Kabib said that anti-drone systems have been put into service and the Government has been working to procure more such systems.
Notably, a young woman was killed when Kuki militants bombed Koutruk using high-tech drones on September 1. Many others including the woman’s minor daughter were also injured in the attack.
Senior officers have been stationed on the ground and they are directly monitoring the security situation, Kabib said.
He said that additional security forces have been de- ployed in foothill and vulnerable areas and army’s helicopters have been deployed for surveillance.
Combing operations have been intensified in both the hills and the valley. The Police Department is also monitoring social media platforms, he said.
K Kabib said that combing operations have been going on in the fringe areas adjoining Kangpokpi-Imphal West districts, Bishnupur-Kangpokpi districts, Bishnupur-Chura- chandpur districts and Imphal East-Kangpokpi districts.
One senior citizen identified as RK Rabei was killed and six people sustained injuries when Kuki militants attacked Moirang Khoiru Leikai with long range rockets on September 6, 2024.
Subsequent upon the attack, a combined team of security forces have been sent in the direction from which the rockets were fired to carry out search operations, the IGP (Intelligence) said.
In the meantime, additional police forces managed to prevent mobs from looting weapons from the armouries of 7th MR and 2nd MR last night.
However, Imphal East Commando OC Inspector Kh Henery and Constable Isaac Kamei sustained injuries as they were attacked by some miscreants with firearms, Kabib said.
On the other hand, nine weapons, 21 explosives and 21 rounds of ammunition were recovered in the course of search operations carried out at Loiching Range, Loibol Khunou and Tingkai Khullen of Kangpokpi district.
The recovered weapons included one sniper rifle and one improvised long range mortar launcher, he said.
IGP (Administration) K Jayanta appealed to all the people to give up all intentions of attacking police officers, plice personnel, their families and looting/snatching weapons.
Jayanta said that befitting actions would be taken up against all those people involved in such violent and unlawful activities.
He once again appealed to all not to repeat attempts to loot weapons from the armoury of State forces.
“There were no casualties last night because we restrained ourselves. Had we fired back to those who attacked the two police personnel, there could have been many casualties”, IGP (Administration) Jayanta added.
