MOIRANG, Sep 27 : Unknown miscreants torched the office of Sub-Deputy Commissioner (SDC) of Kumbi circle in Bishnupur last night at around 8.30.
The fire, fortunately, was doused with the help of Kumbi police before it caused extensive damage to the office.
The fire was extinguished as the locals alerted  the police shortly after they saw two doors of the office burning.
The motive  behind the attack remains unclear and no perpetrators have been arrested as of yet.
Kumbi MLA S Premchandra also rushed to the SDO office and took stock of the situation.
He urged the  police to identify the  perpetrators and take legal action against them.
The MLA said that some people with vested interest creating trouble amid the unrest is unfortunate.
The people who started the fire may be politically motivated, Premchandra added.
It is reported that a meira rally was taken out from Kumbi to Kairenphabi last night and the rallyists went to the SDC office after they heard of the arson incident.
Speaking to the media, the womenfolk said that the miscreants may have  set the office on fire to disrupt the rally and project them in the wrong light.
They urged the Government to book the perpetrators within five days.
Meanwhile, a public emergency meeting was  convened at the residence of the Kumbi MLA today and a resolution was adopted to lend all possible help in identifying the perpetrators.
The attendees at the meeting also resolved to stage a protest against the incident and to take legal actions against those who oppose the decisions they have taken.
They also decided to submit their resolutions to Bishnupur DC, SP and the SDO concerned.
