IMPHAL, Sep 27 : Chairperson of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) Keisham Pradipkumar has stated that underaged marriage is a harmful practise which must be prevented.
He made the statement during a State level one day sensitisation cum workshop which was held at Manipur Press Club under the theme "Preventing child marriage in Manipur."
At the function, Pradipkumar continued that Thoubal district has the maximum cases of child marriage and it is followed by Imphal West and Bishnupur in the second and third place respectively.
In India, the legal age of marriage is 18 years for women and 21 years for men.
He added that underage marriage carries serious health risks and getting pregnant at adolescent age can be detrimental to both the  mother and the baby.
Further stating that girls who marry before 18 are more likely to experience domestic violence, Dr Pradipkumar added that MCPCR has been working at its level best to prevent child marriage in Manipur as much as possible.
He also said that MCPCR has taken up an initiative to prevent child marriage among children taking refuge in relief camps.
Saying that child marriage is a punishable offence under POCSO Act, Dr Pradipkumar appealed to all parents to disapprove child marriage even if the children elope.
He also  said a new legislation will be enacted shortly to increase the marriageable age of girls to 21.
Social Welfare Director Ng Uttam also attended the programme.
He said that the Government faces a lot of difficulties in preventing child marriage due to many shortfalls and lack of Child Marriage Prevent Officer being one.
He also said that preventing underaged marriage by keeping only one officer each at every district to oversee it won't be possible.
Joint Director ICS  of Social Welfare Banter Singh Konthoujam, Imphal East Deputy Commissioner Khumanthem Diana and Programme Officer of MCPCR Sumel Yumnam also attended the programme which was organised by the  National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
