Manipur Police has decided to purchase 10 new anti-drone guns following an intelligence report warning of increased drone threats in the region, a source said. A recent high-level meeting between the State Government and security forces discussed the report, which highlighted potential infiltration of heavily armed Kuki insurgents from Myanmar, trained in guerrilla warfare and drone operations.
The State’s Security Advisor expressed concern over the report and alerted all district SPs. The report indicated that drones could be used to launch attacks in hilly areas of the State. In response, existing anti-drone systems deployed by CRPF and Assam Rifles have been strengthened, with more being installed to counter the threat.
The decision to enhance drone defence comes after a September 1 incident where drones dropped over two dozen bombs in Manipur's Koutruk village, leading to chaos, gunfire, and arson. Security forces, including the Manipur Police, BSF, and CRPF, managed to regain control after hours of drone-led bombardment.
In light of this threat, Manipur Police has requested the purchase of additional anti-drone guns, intending to bolster security across drone-prone areas. Over the past few days, security forces have already shot down more than a dozen drones illegally operating in various parts of the State. The new anti-drone systems are expected to significantly enhance the State’s defense capabilities, with special teams being trained to handle drone threats. These systems are equipped with sensors that detect enemy drones, allowing forces to either shoot them down or drive them away. Sources close to Manipur Police have said that the State police is also in the process of forming a specialised "Drone Hunting Team" to further strengthen its defense strategy. This team will be deployed in high-risk areas, particularly around hilly regions, to detect and neutralise drone threats before they reach the valley or cause damage. The team is receiving paramilitary and Assam Rifles training to ensure optimal performance in drone interception and control.  India Today
