IMPHAL, Sep 23: A combined team of security forces carried out a massive search operation at Laimaton hill range and Litan Kom village after Kuki militants attacked Meitei villages of Langmeidong, Laimanai and Tejpur in Kakching district last night.
Personnel of Kakching district commando, Hiyanglam police, Waikhong police, a platoon of BSF and 26 Assam Rifles conducted the operation at Laimaton hill range and Litan Kom village.
More than 40 houses were thoroughly checked and the identity of over 120 individuals were verified during the operation.
There were no arrests made and no arms and ammunition were recovered during the search operation.
Sources said, well armed Kuki militants who were taking positions on Langmeidong Mamang Ching--Laimaton hill range-- fired towards three Meitei villages of Langmeidong (Mamang Leikai), Laimanai and Tejpur at around 8 pm yesterday.
Village volunteers retaliated by firing towards the Kuki militants.
Later, security personnel also rushed to the spot and retaliated.
The exchange of fire lasted about an hour.
There were no injuries on the side of the security forces, said sources.
Notably, the attack came days after a report of around 900 strong Kuki militants infiltrating into Manipur from Myanmar emerged causing serious security concerns.
The intelligence report had claimed that the 900 Kuki militants are trained in jungle warfare and the use of weaponised drones, and they are grouped in units of 30 members each.
The report stated that the militants may launch coordinated attacks on Meitei villages in the last week of September.
Acknowledging the report to be "100% true" in a press conference recently, Security Advisor to Government of Manipur, Kuldeip Singh, who is also the head of the Unified Command, had stated that all security forces have been alerted and necessary measures were being taken up.
It may be noted that advanced drones were used to drop bombs for the first time in the more than 16-month Manipur conflict on September 1 at Koutruk. The ground and aerial attack on civilians at Koutruk by the Kuki militants on September 1 killed one woman and injured several persons including her minor daughter and personnel of the State security forces.
