The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) has called  on National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) member Nirupama Chakma and National president of Akhil Bharat Hindu Maha Sabha (ABHMS) Rajyashree Chaudhuri as part of their Nationwide campaign demanding enlistment of Meeteis in the ST category of the Constitution.
MMTU, in a statement signed by its organisation secretary Takhelambam Parijat, also said that they have submitted a memorandum to President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Registrar General (Census) for the same cause.
MMTU said that its meeting with Nirupama Chakma was fruitful as the latter believed Meetei should be given ST tag
As per the union, she (the NCST member) expressed desire  to resolve the issues among the indigenous people in Manipur through dialogue.
MMTU further said that Rajyashree Chaudhuri, on the other hand, was against non-inclusion of Meeteis in the ST list.
According to the ABHMS National president, not giving constitutional safeguard to Meeteis all these years amounts to leaving the ethnic group to their fate, the Union said and added that Rajyashree Chaudhuri endorsed the popular demand to grant ST status to the Meetei.
Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU) stated that they will continue their campaign and meet other influential people to protect the political, social and economic rights of the Meetei.
