IMPHAL, Sep 22 : The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) has appealed to the authorities concerned to waive off loans as well as taxes including GST and also to subsidise the fare of flights operating to and from Imphal.
A delegation of MMTU has submitted a memorandum to the Reserve Bank of India and highlighted that Manipur is currently facing a crippling economic crisis on account of the protracted violent conflict.
All small businesses and industries have collapsed and the agriculture sector too has been crippled. On the other hand, prices of all essential commodities have skyrocketed. Given this situation, people who took loans from banks and the Government are in no position to repay the loans, the MMTU pointed out in their memorandum. Highlighting the urgent need for the Centre to announce an economic package for the loanees, the MMTU also appealed to the Ministry of Finance to waive off all kinds of taxes  including GST levied on the people until the State’s economy recovers fully. Levying taxes under the current situation has turned to be a huge burden to all entrepreneurs and other people running small businesses and industries, the MMTU said in a press release. The MMTU delegation also submitted a representation to the Chairperson, National Commission for Minorities pointing out that air travel is the only means of communication with the outside world for the people of Manipur at present.     All the highways connecting Imphal with other parts of the country are in highly deplorable conditions. As such, transportation of goods on these highways is a big, daily struggle. As for movement of people, these highways are totally inaccessible to a vast majority of the people on account of the protracted violent conflict. Air transport is the only option available to them for movement outside the State. The MMTU urged the National Commission for Minorities to take up the matter with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and see that fares for flights operating to and from Imphal are subsidized.
