IMPHAL, Aug 26 : Imphal East fencing team emerged overall team champions with record 92 medals including 27 gold, 23 silver and 42 bronze to lift the Governor's Cup as the 20th Governor's Cup Fencing Championship hosted by the Manipur Fencing Association at YAS Fencing Hall, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex came to a close.
The prize distribution cum closing function of the championship was graced by T Phulen Meitei, Director Youth Affairs and Sports; S Pritamkumar, president Manipur Fencing Association; Dr W Johnson, Deputy Director (Prevention) Manipur AIDS Control Society as presidium members who also presented prizes to the winners.
Imphal West fencing team finished overall runners up with 3 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze medals to win the Hijam Ongbi Shyama trophy.
Imphal East also sealed the Thangjam Gulap Singh Trophy and Thangjam Ongbi Mani Devi Trophy for becoming men's and women's overall champions.
The last day of the championship saw L Chinglembi of Imphal East clinching gold medal in the junior girls epee competition after defeating compatriot N Dibiya 15-9 in the final. S Nelcyrose of Thoubal and G Keniya of Imphal East bagged the bronze medals in the category.
Imphal East sub-junior fencers also added 4 gold medals to their tally today as T Kadamba defeated compatriot P Arjun 15-10 for the boys' epee gold medal; Th Kishorjit defeated compatriot N Lanchenba 15-11 for the boys' sabre gold medal; N Piyanganbi beat IW's Minarva 10/9 for the girls' epee gold and A Florina beat compatriot N Nirupama 15-11 for the girls' sabre gold.
Henthoisana of Chandel in the meantime won the sub-junior boys foil event gold defeating Imphal East's Lamyanba 15-14 in a tight contest and N Rashina of Imphal West defeated Ch Puspa of Imphal East 15-9 to seal the sub-junior girls' foil event gold.
