IMPHAL, Aug 16 : The Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) of Churachandpur has been directed to inquire into possible clearing of land near Khuga Dam in Churachandpur and to submit the report at the earliest.
Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar S, in a letter to the SDO, cited a report from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the district while directing the SDO to probe the matter.
Yesterday (August 15), Churachandpur DFO Ether Laltankim Serto sent a missive to the DC, informing the latter that there has been clearing of land near Khuga Dam on the southern side.
The DFO said that the cleared land is supposedly put on sale by a private party.
"Considering the location of the said land, there is a high possibility that the land has already been compensated at the time of construction and damming of Khuga Dam," the  letter read.
The DFO also said that using forest land for no forest purposes without taking prior approval from the Central Government is not allowed under Section 2(ii) of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980.
Seeking information on the legal status and ownership  of the said patch of land along with the details of the compensating authority, if any, the DFO, in the letter, added that necessary action will be taken up after the report is furnished.
