IMPHAL, Jul 1: While showering praises on Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi for raising the Manipur issue in the Parliament today, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has launched a scathing attack on the Centre and Chief Minister N Biren Singh for "failing" Manipur.
Speaking to reporters at Congress Bhavan today, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president MLA K Meghachandra said Rahul Gandhi has kept the promises he made in Manipur and has spoken on the Manipur issue in the Parliament when Prime Minister Modi remained silent.
He said that Rahul Gandhi's speech during the motion of thanks on the President's address today shows he has Manipur in his heart and is standing firm for the State.
When the President didn't mention anything about Manipur in her address, Rahul Gandhi spoke on the Manipur issue. He raised several questions on the Manipur issue, but none of the 72 Council of Ministers including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were able to give an answer, he added.
Describing what Rahul Gandhi said in the Parliament, Meghachandra said the BJP-led Modi 3.0 Government is treating Manipur as an alien State--as if she is not part of India.
What is happening in Manipur is a "civil war" and Modi and Amit Shah are responsible for this. Even though the INC and INDIA Bloc have repeatedly urged and suggested ways to end the crisis, the Modi Government has remained a "silent spectator."
Let alone visiting Manipur, Modi has not even spoken a word on Manipur ever since the conflict started. He is unable to protect the lives and properties of the people of Manipur. Till today, Modi is unable to answer when he is going to speak on the Manipur issue, visit the State and resolve the crisis, Meghachandra said.
While Prime Minister Modi stood on the floor of the Parliament today and responded to many questions, he was silent on every question on Manipur. The silence of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister is telling that the Manipur crisis is "their doing", said Meghachandra.
Even as the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister have not done anything to end the crisis, Rahul Gandhi has started converting the promises he made in Manipur into reality, he added.
Responding to a query of the media, Meghachandra said Rahul Gandhi's speech in the Parliament will certainly have an impact.
"Rahul Gandhi's words in the Parliament will certainly have an impact. People all over the world will notice it. It is indeed shameful for the Modi 3.0 Government," Meghachandra said.
When asked what he thinks of the Chief Minister's claim that "resolving Manipur issue is included in the 100 days programme of the Modi 3.0", Meghachandra said the CM's statement can't be taken seriously.
"In the last 14 months, we have heard the CM make various statements. His statements can't be taken seriously," Meghachandra said.
The Centre has taken power from the State. The Chief Minister has been unable to convert every word he has spoken so far into action. "Manipur at present is under 'undeclared President's Rule', and we have no expectations from the State Government," he added.
Responding to another query, Meghachandra said an MPCC delegation has met with AICC leader Malikarjun Kharge and Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi recently, and the Central leaderships have been urged to give ample opportunity to the two Manipur MPs to speak in the Parliament.
During the meeting, the two Congress' leaders were also urged to give the two MPs the time allotted to other Opposition MPs.
"There are two more days left of the session, and we believe that the two MPs [Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and Alfred Kanngam S Arthur] will get time to speak in the Parliament," said MPCC president MLA K Meghachandra.
