Rahul Gandhi’s visit was a peace mission : MPCC

IMPHAL, Jul 9 : Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra has stated that Opposition (Lok Sabha) leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Manipur had no intention of scoring any political mileage.
He was here on a peace mission to explore a solution to the 14 months old violent crisis and bring peace and harmony between the two warring communities, Meghachandra asserted.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today, Meghachandra said that he was grateful to Rahul Gandhi for visiting Manipur and interacting with the people on his first official trip as the Opposition leader.
He also conveyed gratitude to all the people of different communities, security forces and media for making the Opposition leader’s visit to Manipur a grand success.
“On behalf of MPCC, I would like to thank Rahul Gandhi for interacting with displaced people of both Meitei community and Chin-Kuki community at different relief camps and assuring them to raise the Manipur crisis in the Parliament as well as with the Government so as to bring a peaceful solution at the earliest”, Meghachandra said.
During his interaction with displaced persons at Jiribam, Moirang and Churachandpur, Rahul Gandhi preached peace.
Categorically stating that violence and hatred cannot bring any kind of solution to the protracted crisis, Rahul Gandhi appealed to all the people for communal harmony and peaceful co-existence, he said.
After inspecting several products made by IDPs at relief camps, the Opposition leader expressed keen desire for resettlement of all the IDPs at their original villages at the earliest.
After listening to the plight of students staying in relief camps, Rahul Gandhi also tried to motivate them, Meghachandra said.
The MPCC president said that Rahul Gandhi also interacted with the family of the man who committed suicide due to extreme poverty, despair and depression inside a prefabricated house of Kwakta Sericulture farm a few days back.
Rahul Gandhi talked with the bereaved family at the Phubala relief camp, he added.
The MPCC president expressed regret for not allowing media persons to cover Rahul Gandhi’s interaction with IDPs inside relief camps.
He said that media persons were not inside the relief camps due to security reasons.
He further conveyed gratitude to all the CSOs and others who submitted memoranda to the Opposition leader on the Manipur crisis and resolving the same.
MPCC working presidents Victor Keishing, K Devabrata, vice president L Tilotama and general secretary (administration) S Jiten were also present at the press meet.
