IMPHAL, Jun 7 : Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (ILDS) Hospital located at Kwakeithel has successfully carried out an endoscopic intragastric  balloon placement for the first time in North East India, said Dr Nongthombam Surajkumar who is the Managing Director of the hospital.
Speaking to the media at its  boardroom today, Dr Surajkumar continued that the medical procedure was performed on a 42 year old obese man who suffered from varied ailments connected with weight gain (overweight).
Saying that the patient is 171 centimetres tall and his ideal weight should be around 72 kg, Dr Surajkumar added that the person, however, weighed around 121 kg when he came to the hospital.
Further stating that the patient suffers from liver cirrhosis and uncontrolled diabetes apart from having high blood pressure and cholesterol level and low haemoglobin and oxygen level, the doctor added that the patient couldn't undergo surgery due to the risk factors involved and his medical conditions.
The only option available to save the life of the patient was to perform an endoscopic intragastric balloon placement, he said.
Dr Surajkumar said that a saline filled silicone balloon is placed in the liver of a patient with the help of an endoscopy in an endoscopic intragastric balloon placement procedure and it took about five minutes.
The balloon is to be kept at around 450 ml in the liver and it can expand upto 750 ml, he said and added that the patient will lose appetite after the balloon is placed and it will help the person in his/her weight loss journey and also control other complications.
The balloon can be kept inside the liver for about a year, he added.
The patient who had undergone the weight loss procedure has to change his lifestyle by consulting a dietician and also exercise regularly, Dr Surajkumar advised.
To a query, the doctor said that there is no side effect of balloon placement other than nausea and vomiting.
