IMPHAL, Jun 25 : Alfred Kanngam Arthur and Dr Bimol Akoijam were sworn in as Members of Parliament today.
While Dr Bimol took the oath to uphold Constitution in Meiteilon (Manipuri language), Alfred K Arthur did the same in English wearing a traditional Tangkhul shawl.
After taking the oath, Alfred K Arthur asked the Members of the House to deliver justice to the people of Manipur.
INDIA Bloc leaders chanted "Manipur... Manipur" by thumping the desks when the names of the two MPs from Manipur were called out for the oath taking and during their swearing in.
Dr Bimol and Alfred K Arthur, both Congress MPs, were elected from Inner and Outer Manipur Parliamentary seats respectively.
Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats (Inner and Outer) and both of them were won by the Congress  party with a huge margin.
The general election to Lok Sabha was held in two phases in Manipur on April 19 and April 26 and the result was declared on June 4.
Notably,  a delegation of Congress leaders from Manipur led by former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi met the party's leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and some other AICC leaders at the National capital yesterday and they discussed the issue in Manipur.
The State Congress team had reportedly requested the party's leaders to let Dr Bimol and Alfred K Arthur present the crisis of Manipur on the floor of the House during the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha which began yesterday.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committe president K Meghachandra said that the Congress party is determined to bring the Manipur situation to the forefront in Parliament.
He also informed that they have minutely discussed several incidents which took place in Manipur in the course of violence with Rahul Gandhi and the AICC president.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kharge wrote, “This time, Manipur voted for compassion, peace, and harmony. PM Modi's abject apathy towards the people was soundly rejected. The BJP State Govt is complicit in failing to prevent the violence, even as tens of thousands of people still suffer the unending circle of turmoil.”
Kharge attached a video of the meeting in the post.
"Our party high command has shown its commitment and stand for the people of Manipur. The party has given time to both our MPs to speak in Lok Sabha for Manipur," Keisham Meghchandra, who heads the Congress' unit in Manipur, posted on X.
