MOA celebrates Olympic Day

IMPHAL, Jun 23 : As celebrated across the Nation and the globe, the Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) today joined in celebrating the day with a simple function at the courtyard of Olympic Bhavan, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
A run bearing the message of olympism was also held along the perimeter of the sports complex as a part of the celebration. The run was flagged off by MLA of Wangkhei AC and president of All Manipur Mukna Association, Thangjam Arunkumar and MOA president Sunil Elangbam.
Speaking at the function, MOA vice president stressed on the importance of celebrating the day and recalled the revival work of Olympic Games as proposed by Pierre de Coubertin who is regarded as the father of Modern Olympic Games.
Pierre de Coubertin raised a proposal during the world’s first Congress on Physical Education held in 1889 in Paris to build the international network of educators, politicians, aristocrats, commerce, culture and sport to fulfil his Olympic dream was acclaimed during an international congress held from June 16 to 23 in 1894. The congress was attended by more than 75 representatives from 12 Nations, he recalled.
Following the event, the first modern Olympic Games was proposed to be held at Paris in 1990 but it was later rescheduled and held in 1896 in Athens in the face of a motion raised by Greece, he said. 289 athletes from across 13 Nations participated in the games and since then it has been the biggest quadrennial sporting extravaganza, he said.
He addec that this upcoming edition of the games to be hosted in Paris will be an important edition which aims at achieving full gender parity. He also called upon all to be a part of the celebration of olympic day which brings the message of peace, goodness, international co-operation.
