IMPHAL, Jun 10: Pressing on their brazen offensive to take complete control of Jiribam district which borders Assam, more and more Kuki militants have been moving towards Jiribam from different directions.
After halting for a brief period during the Lok Sabha elections, Kuki militants have resumed their offensive which they launched on May 3, 2023.
This time the Kuki militants have been attacking Meitei residents of Jiribam with an apparent motive to take control of Jiribam district as well as NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway).
The Kuki militants launched their aggression at Jiribam by murdering one Meitei civilian, Soibam Saratkumar in the most brutal manner on June 6.
In addition to murdering the Meitei civilian, the Kuki militants burnt down as many as 72 Meitei houses and three police outposts.
Now more and more Kuki militants have been moving toward Jiribam on terrestrial and water routes with a sinister objective to cleanse the entire Jiribam district of Meiteis, sources said.
A large number of Kuki militants armed with sophisticated militants have been seen moving toward Jiribam from Lakhimpur on motorboats along Barak River and Jiri River.
Kuki militants are also camping in the Kuki-Zo villages of Moinathol, Bethel etc in Cachar district of Assam across Barak River. These Kuki militants move around different areas of Jiribam at night, said the sources.
At the same time, large groups of Kuki militants have been moving toward Jiribam along Jiribam-Tipaimukh road as seen in different social media posts.
On learning about the large number of Kuki militants moving towards Jiribam from different directions, Meitei people residing at villages located some distance away from Jiribam district headquarters have vacated their houses and moved to relief camps opened at the district headquarters.
Although the State Government has sent additional State forces to Jiribam, no security arrangement has been made so far for rehabilitation of the displaced people at their native villages, said the sources.
Jiribam is located 220 Kms away from Imphal and its population, according to the 2011 census, was 43,838. While Meiteis constitute a large chunk of the Jiri populace, there are many other communities in the district.
Jiribam district is bounded by Tousem sub-division of Tamenglong district, Tipaimukh sub-division of Pherzawl district and Cachar district of Assam. The district is drained by Barak River and Jiri River.
Jiribam district is also Manipur’s gateway to the West and Imphal-Jiribam highway is at the moment the only reliable highway for transportation of essential commodities, particularly the Imphal valley.
