IMPHAL, May 2 : The World Meetei Council (WMC) has urged the Chief Minister to refrain from using "hurting Naga sentiment" as a reason to delay sending the ST recommendation and the ethnographic and socioeconomic reports to the Centre.
A press release issued by Yambem Arun Meetei, secretary general, CEC, WMC has stated that disseminating such logic might lead people to misread the situation and cause harm to the long-standing brotherhood between Nagas and Meeteis.
WMC further reasoned that Naga personalities such as Alfred Kanngam S Arthur, INC candidate; social worker Ashang Kasar and Alyson Abonmai, Independent candidate have said before the media that Meeteis do not need to seek the permission of other communities to demand their fundamental right, neither do other communities need to present their opinion on the matter. Everything will be carried out as per the Indian Constitution.
Stating that the Meetei community will be in dire straits if the ST demand is not fulfilled before the 2026 delimitation exercise, WMC has urged the Chief Minister to take the necessary measures while reminding him that the responsibility lies with him to amend the situation.
Meanwhile, WMC continued their ongoing ST demand campaign at Kakwa Bazar today.
