IMPHAL, Mar 9: The Manipur Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO) has vehemently condemned the brutal physical assault on a driver and a handyman at Moreh recently and urged the Government to arrest the culprits by March 13.
If the culprits are not booked and arrested by March 13, MMWO will launch stringent agitations, said its president Boboi Korimayum.
Notably, the two Meitei Pangals were brutally assaulted by suspected armed Kuki militants near Moreh College on March 7.
At the office of the MMWO at Hatta Minuthong today, Boboi said the driver and the handyman had delivered sand for construction of a barrack at IB Police Post at Moreh, and were returning when they got abducted and beaten black and blue.
MMWO strongly condemns the incident in the strongest terms. No community should allow such incidents to take place in the future, he said.
The incident happened in Moreh where Central forces have a large presence. Despite their presence, Moreh has become a hotspot for crime and "Kuki volunteers" have been given a free hand. This is very unfortunate, Boboi said.
Amid the turmoil in the State, there have been many incidents where drivers and handymen ferrying essential goods were assaulted. However, the Government is yet to take concrete steps for safety and security of the drivers and handymen, he said.
Boboi further asserted that the violent incidents and crimes happening in the peripheries have proved that the Central forces are ineffective.
