IMPHAL, Feb 11 : The 29th Martyrdom Anniversary of Saheed Madhumangal Sharma was observed today at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy (JNMDA), Imphal.
The programme organised by Saheed Madhumangal Foundation, Imphal, was attended by Manipur University, Vice Chancellor, Prof N Lokendra Singh; Manipur University, former Vice Chancellor, Dr Ng Bijoy Singh; Thangmeiband AC MLA, Khumukcham Joykishan; Patsoi AC MLA, Sapam Kunjakeshwor and Saheed Madhumangal Foundation president, A Brajakumar Sharma among others.
The observation began with the offering of floral tribute to a photograph of Saheed Madhumangal Sharma followed by the release of a souvenir.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ng Bijoy said that Saheed Madhumangal was born to Samurailatpam Ibohal Sharma and Uttarani Devi on October 22, 1938 at Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, Imphal.
He shared that Saheed Madhumangal was the first Mining Engineering Graduate from Manipur and after his retirement as Additional Director of Industry Department on June 22, 1984, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party to serve the people.
Highlighting that Saheed Madhumangal worked tirelessly to mobilize the BJP machinery from the grass root level, Dr Ng Bijoy said, "He was the president of BJP, Manipur Pradesh from 1985-90, a member of BJP National Executive Committee for three consecutive terms and the secretary of BJP North Eastern States Co-ordination Council since October 1993 till his untimely demise. He was also an active member of RSS, VHP and many other social & cultural organisations of Manipur from the early part of 1950".
He continued that Saheed Madhumangal was also jailed for 18 months in 1976 for participating in 'Lok Sangharsh Samiti' under the leadership of Jai Prakash Narayan.
Dr Ng Bijoy also mentioned that standing true to his desire to represent the State and voice the sentiments of the people in the Parliament, Saheed Madhumangal participated in the Lok Sabha election held in 1984, 1989 & 1992 as a BJP candidate.
Dr Ng Bijoy further called on the people to remember and learn from the visionary leader Shaheed Madhumangal, who always stood for the territorial integrity of the Nation and died for the cause on February 11, 1995.
