IMPHAL, Dec 31 : Former rebel leader RK Meghen has appealed to the State Government to promote the historical sites of Manipur in Assam such as Leng Ondabi Pat and Manipur Levi Ground by consulting with their counterpart in the neighbouring State.
Addressing a press briefing at his residence at Sagolband today, Meghen said that Meeteis living in Assam and different organisations have been working to designate the place in Banskandi, Cachar where Manipur Levy was established during the time of Chahi Taret Khuntakpa as Manipur Levy Memorial Ground.
Saying that statues of Maharaj Gambhir Singh and Nara Singh have already been installed at the site which is closely associated with the history of Manipur, he added that Manipur Levy was established 200 years back with 500 soldiers with the help of the British to drive away the Burmese from the Kangleipak and win back the sovereignty of the erstwhile kingdom.
Saying that the soldiers of Manipur Levy were trained in a vast ground close to Barak River at Chandrapur Banskandi, he added that the training ground is still known as Manipur Levy Ground.
As per British records, the population in Manipur's valley during the period of 1819 to 1826 was around six lakhs, he said and added that many of the Manipur people were taken as war prisoners while many others were killed inside houses by burning chillies during the seven year devastation.
Further stating that many Meiteis fled to Cachar following the Burmese invasion, Meghen maintained that the population in Manipur's valley dropped to around 35,000 to 40,000 as per the British records.
He also expressed desire for the Government to take the school and colleges to the places in Assam especially Cachar which have deep historical connections with Manipur so as to build a sense of patriotism and unity among the Meeteis.
Meghen, meanwhile, said that there is a need to unite the Meeteis especially those living in Assam, Tripura and Manipur to safeguard the State which has been facing a grave crisis since May 3 last year.
Saying that it is the armed illegal immigrants from Myanmar who started the conflict to destabilise Manipur, he added that unity among the indigenous communities is indispensable to keep Manipur intact.
The indigenous people should help one another and promote peaceful coexistence, he added.
Meghen concluded his speech by conveying his New Year greetings to all the indigenous people of Manipur.
