IMPHAL, Dec 29 : Launching a scathing attack on the BJP, former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has stated that the crisis in Manipur would have been resolved in the first month itself if someone like Dr Manmohan Singh had been the Prime Minister.
Ibobi who is also the CLP leader made the statement during a programme held in honour of the former Prime Minister at Congress Bhavan today. Manmohan passed away on Dec 26.
Congress leaders paid floral tributes to the photo of Dr Manmohan Singh, the architect of modern India's economy, during the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Ibobi said that the contribution of Dr Manmohan Singh in taking the entire North East States to greater heights was immense.
It was during the tenure of Dr Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister that the Special Plan Assistance (SPA) was introduced and granted Special Status to North East States, Ibobi said and added that different developmental projects were taken up in both the hill and valley districts during the time of UPA Government.
He went on to state that Manipur University was upgraded to a Central University by the UPA Government apart from building Mini Secretariats in hill districts, setting up district hospitals and improving the infrastructure of Sub Divisional Headquarters under Dr Manmohan Singh.
Dr Manmohan was a quiet and soft spoken leader who was more action oriented, Ibobi said and added that different world leaders including former United States President Barack Obama also revere the late former Prime Minister.
It was the reforms of Dr Manmohan Singh which saved the Indian economy from collapsing while he was the Finance Minister, Ibobi said.
Further stating that India signing a nuclear deal with the United States under the leadership of Dr Manmohan shocked the world leaders and showed the prowess of the country, Ibobi added that India today is able to be the 5th largest economy in the world due to the foundation laid down by Dr Man-mohan.
CWC member Gai-khangam, said that Dr Manmohan Singh was a distinguished leader who served the country in different capacities and comman- ded respect from leaders across the globe.
Continuing that Dr Manmohan was a calm, simple and action oriented leader of integrity, Gaikha-ngam maintained that different flagship programmes were also introduced under the leadership of Dr Manmohan.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, after paying his respect, said that Dr Manmohan Singh was a reformer who introduced the RTI Act and MGNREGS among other notable schemes.
Khundrakpam AC MLA Th Lokeshwar, ex-MP Dr Th Meinya, ex-MLAs and other Congress leaders and executives also attended the programme.
